Willow budbreak
The bud opens: it is budbreak.
The first leaves are preformed.
They grow rapidly, since the tree only needs to inflate already created tissues.

Twig growth
Afterwards, leaves on the twig develop more slowly.
The twig adapts its growth to the resources available in its environment.
In a year, if conditions are right, it can extend up to three metres and bear close to 200 leaves.
