The willow grove is intimately linked with the Japanese Garden. The background visible behind a garden can be "borrowed", or made into an integral part of it.

A cedar hedge that links the Japanese Garden in the foreground with the distant background, thus affords the willows the role of Shakkei, or "borrowed landscape". The Japanese Garden is thus infused with the presence of these immense Salix, whose pale green in spring and golden foliage in autumn thrill us, year after year.
